A Brief History of Torre Del Mar Congregation….
A little over a century since the initial contact between Irish Presbyterians and Spain, the PCI Overseas Board received a request from the Spanish Evangelical Church in 1985, during the visit of Revs Ken Newell and George Preston, to develop the partnership and send a minister to work within the English-speaking communities of the Costa Del Sol, with the objective of planting a further English-speaking IEE congregation. In response to this request, Rev. David McCarthy and family began just such a ministry at Torre Del Mar in 1987. Working as a minister of a sister church and as a member of the Presbytery of Eastern Andalucia, the partnership between the two churches began a new chapter.
With a small congregation established, Rev Adrian McLernon continued the work in Torre Del Mar following the McCarthy’s return to Ireland, and, 3 years later, Rev Bill Addley was among a number of those who filled the vacancy after Adrian’s return with his family to Ireland.
In 2002, Jacki Hartsmith Foy was commissioned as a “special minister”, and after a period of 5 years was ordained into the IEE. Following Jacki’s retirement in 2013 and subsequent resignation from the IEE in 2014, Steve Anderson was commissioned as minister of word and sacrament in Torre Del Mar in July 2014. This followed a brief period of ministry by Rev Colin Dickson who administered the interregnum following Jacki’s retirement.
This small IEE congregation continues to worship and seeks to provide a spiritual home to those within the wider Vélez-Málaga area and beyond. Welcoming all who have a faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and also those seeking to explore what such a connection with Christ would mean, the congregation strives to be a safe place in which to explore the Christian faith without pressure, leaving all to determine their own relationship with Jesus and what this means.
